numbers in their own polling. and one side or the other is going to be wrong because they are using the wrong sample size or sample set. >> that's correct. you know, as i have looked at this, i think you have different assumptions about turnout. we always joke, the cliche, it depends on turnout. but scientifically or more practically, you are going to get more democrats than republicans to show up by a wide margin, you are going to get something close to even between republicans and democrats or possibly you are going to have a republican edge. and historically, democrats out perform republicans by, you know, a poign, two points or three points. it is not usually like 20 very 8, when it was by 8 points. so i think the question is, are we going to see a repeat of the 2008 turnout, where the democrats did the best they have done in a gen scpraigz we have seen in many of the sampling of the state polls that look good for the president, or something closer to 2004, in which president bush at the time squeaked out a narrow victory. i think these are the questions that i am trying to figu

evacuation order was in effect at the time, but many people chose to stay behind. let us show you what parts of long beach island used to look like. as a point of reference, notice the white house at the bottom of the cul-de-sac, the one with the pool. now look at it today. that's the white house, wrecked, and the street is now a canal. long beach island has 150,000 residents in the summer, but today we found it mostly empty. the national guard is on patrol. earth movers are clearing roads of tons of beach sand. piles of debris are rising in parking lots. among the only residents here today were frank and sandra smith. they rode ow the storm. they're in day three without power, an and the utility may shut off the gas in town tonight as a safety precaution. it's been several days now since the storm. what has it been like living here on the island? >> cold. dreary. we have no water, except drinking water. no electric. >> pelley: why did you decide to stay? >> because we knew if we left, we couldn't come back. they won't let-- if we leave now, we can't come back. would you like to see inside?

no home anymore. our joe johns is following us in washington on this story. but what he is following is that new jersey governor chris christy is now saying that people in the affected areas of new jersey, people affected by hurricane sandy can now vote electronically. they can vote by e-mail and they can vote by fax. it is an interesting turn. joe, what are you finding out about this? >> well, it's a very interesting turn, don. as you said, in response to the super storm, the governor has issued a directive. this is for misplaced voters that can submit ballot applications by e-mail or by fax to the county clerk. the clerk sends them a ballot and then they have to return that ballot by about 8:00 p.m. on tuesday. it sounds highly unusual. to some, it may sound off the wall. but the fact of the matter is, in an emergency situation, there is some precedent for it. the united states actually has a program for military and overseas voters to basically do very similar things. so chris christie is taking a page from that pramt aogram and trying to find out how new jersey voters are not dis

to the numbers from dean mackey joining us from barclay's. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> any hair on the numbers, so to speak, as far as you can tell? >> i think this was a followed report when you look at the broad categories of job growth, when you look at the participation rate rise. the only underlying softness was in ourly earnings, but that really doesn't change the sfoer of where we've been. boug bottom line, the labor market has picked up some of the momentum after slowing down this summer. still a moderate recovery, though. >> yeah. the raining on expectationses w was 30,000 on one end. that beats even the top of the range. how could people have uniformly underestimated the number? >> the problem here is we're getting these upward revisions and so what happened last month the number was 114,000. that's been revised up significantly. if everyone would have known what that number actually was, we probably would have had higher numbers going into today's number. so it's just part of the game here, these upward revisions. >> look iing forward, dean, wit the hurricane and the

. that was it. now they're praying for us. jenna: with the transit system still operating at reduces capacity this is what a lot of roads are looking like across the region. that is certainly affecting supplies getting to people that need help. millions are facing huge traffic jams trying to make it work any way that they can. jon: if the fight, the fight for fuel in new york and new jersey is any indication, things are getting desperate. damage from the storms disrupting fuel deliveries forcing gas stations to close. causing enormous lines, like, this one you see in new york city. police arrested one man after he tried to cut in line at a gas station and pointed a gun at mother motorist who complained. that is the kind of thing that is happening. according to aaa 60% of the stations in new jersey and 70% of the stations on new york's long island are either closed or have no fuel. we will have much more on this in a live report just ahead. jenna: certainly is one of our biggest stories of the day. also a big story is this one. we have a new jobs report today, the last one before election day
